1901: The year it all began
Adolf Moser founded the Badischen Saphir-Schleifwerke company in Elzach, Germany. Gemstones were polished and glazed for use as jewel meter bearings in clocks and measuring devices.
For more than 120 years, we’ve been demonstrating how creative minds and steady, experienced hands create small marvels here in the town of Elzach in the Black Forest region of Germany. OSKAR MOSER stand for first-class water jet nozzles with sapphires, rubies & diamonds, outstanding precision bearings and innovative service. We offer custom-tailored solutions for every branch of industry, including classic machine building, the paper industry, industrial cleaning, medical technology and many more. Whether it’s precision mechanical bearings or nozzles, all our products are characterised by their outstanding quality and precision. This brilliant made-in-Germany technology is sought after throughout the world and reflects the many years of expertise and skilled craftsmanship of OSKAR MOSER.
OSKAR Moser Technische Edelsteine GmbH boast extensive technical facilities, including an in-house jet laboratory for nozzle testing and development, state-of-the-art CAD technology for module design and extensive storage capacity. Our in-house design department enable the production of prototypes, while special laser systems are used for both labelling and the precise processing of technical gemstones (rubies, sapphires and diamonds).
Compact and precise, yet just as powerful in series production – our experienced team of experts in Elzach enable flexible production in volumes ranging from one-off items to large series. Thanks to our optimally equipped facilities, we’re able to meet any challenge with ease. A combination of many years of experience, traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art CNC & CAM technology – as well as digital machine technology – forms the foundation for innovative solutions from a single source.
Living and working in the southern Black Forest region fosters a deep awareness for nature and the environment – and we’re no exception. That’s why we consistently utilise sustainable energy and practice active climate protection. As a joint partner of the local energy co-operative connected to the Elzach local heating grid, we’re actively committed to independent and regional energy supply. We also utilise environmentally friendly mobility, as our vehicles are naturally powered by clean electricity.
At our production company, we utilise resource-conserving loops, recycling and re-utilisation. Sustainability is also reflected in our products – our new trim nozzles can be configured after production and optimally adapted to a production process, for example. Instead of always buying new, we optimise and modify existing equipment – very much in line with our principle of sustainability. In addition, our professional nozzle cleaning service extends the service life of our products considerably. Our focus is on top quality for the longest service life possible – a win for both people and the environment.
You can’t really grow if you don’t know your own roots. The history of the OSKAR MOSER production company in Elzach is full of twists and upheavals, whether it’s the untimely passing of company founder Adolf Moser, a major setback in 1933, the destructive bomb attack of 1944, new beginnings in 1948, the rise to global market leader with bearings for meters or the radical business model change which took place in 2016. We didn’t seek these things out, but we grew from them and are an especially strong, resilient company today as a result. It’s a real advantage in the current age of transformation – we at OSKAR MOSER truly shine in times of transition and realignment.
Adolf Moser founded the Badischen Saphir-Schleifwerke company in Elzach, Germany. Gemstones were polished and glazed for use as jewel meter bearings in clocks and measuring devices.
In 1912, Adolf Moser set forth on a journey across the sea to the USA, bringing a large number of orders with him and laying the foundation for the international character of the company.
When Adolf Moser died in 1915, his son Oscar took over his business at the age of just 21.
Oskar Moser developed a ‘glazing machine’ for grinding (patent granted in 1926). The company became a leading supplier of high-quality, precision-ground meter jewels and sapphires.
Oskar Moser, considered a ‘half-Jew’ due to his marriage to Rosl Türkheimer, a woman of the Jewish faith, was pressured to hand over his business to the IG Farben conglomerate.
The Moser couple moved to Freiburg, where they founded Edelsteinschleiferei Jung & Co. in 1934 together with relatives from Switzerland.
Business was going well – that is, until the evening of 27 November, 1944. During the massive bombardment of Freiburg, the Jung & Co. plant was completely destroyed.
In 1948, Oskar Moser founded his new company in Elzach: ‘OSKAR MOSER Technische Edelsteine’. A family-run business was on course for growth.
The company grew, moved into the newly constructed building in Freiburger Street in 1964 and opened a branch in Biederbach shortly afterwards. Before long, sons Rolf, Werner and Heinz were active at the company as well.
OSKAR MOSER began in-house production of turned parts and magnetic bearings in 1971.
From 1980 onwards, complete meter bearings were being produced from a single source at OSKAR MOSER. This resulted in a successful breakthrough on the world market, with the term ‘Moser quality’ becoming a trademark.
By the year 2000, OSKAR MOSER had become a global leader in sapphire bearings for electricity meters with a market share of well over 80 percent. In modern parlance, the company had become a ‘global player’, though being a hidden champion by nature, Heinz Moser didn’t make a big fuss about it.
With digitalisation and the implementation of energy transition law in 2016, classic electricity meters became a thing of the past. What was needed now was creativity. A new business model had to be devised. Nozzle technology would become the foundation of the future. OSKAR MOSER had already developed their own integrated water jet nozzle in 2006, which they introduced to the market as the TRD1 in 2008 – it was trim nozzle technology which had never been seen before.
Top-quality nozzles with technical gemstones are used in water jet technology, industrial cleaning applications, the paper industry, and the medical technology sector. OSKAR MOSER is the perfect fit when it comes to refined, precise solutions.
The company needs to establish itself on all of these markets – a Herculean feat. The first phase of this transformation saw job losses – clear evidence of just how difficult it is to achieve a seamless transition. In the meantime, OSKAR MOSER were reinventing themselves as nozzle specialists under the management of the family’s fourth generation – on a global scale.
In many respects, 2018 would become a positive turning point in the latter history of OSKAR MOSER. With Managing Director Dirk Nießen at the helm, a completely new nozzle division would be added to the portfolio: 3D printing with the company’s own oscar3D brand. This is also when the environmental offensive would begin, with the connection to Elzach local heating, the use of LED lighting and a fleet of electric vehicles.
In addition to brass versions ECO & VARIO and the MK8 & MK10 connection options, the new stainless steel version for the 3D printing nozzle was introduced: oscar3D PRO.
With three service modules for development, process optimisation and technical consultation coordinated with one another, the production company in Elzach offer their customers unique engineering expertise and solidify their unique position in the market with the Technology-Plus service.
